Definitions Visual literacy is the ability to read images and write visually rich communications and can move gracefully and fluently between text and images, between literal and figurative worlds. (Frey and Fisher, 2008) A Piktochart is an infographic, that is used to deliver information to the viewer through pictures as minimal text. Values and Benefits Frey and Fisher state, “Probably the most compelling reason for using images in instruction is that images are stored in long-term memory.” (Frey and Fisher, 2008) With the amount of information needed to cover growing, there needs to be a method put in place to help students remember what has been taught. When they see a visual image of a concept, coupled with text it will help them grasp the information. Additionally, when the students have a visual representation of abstract concepts it helps them make connections. It will also help them apply these concepts to real world situations. Creation is a higher order thinking skill. Teaching students to create Piktocharts will give them a tool that they can use to convey information in a clear and concise manner. Students will need to compile information and be able to discern the most important parts so that they can keep their Piktochart simple, which is one its of the characteristics. Students will also find that is easy to share a Piktochart across different platforms. Appropriate Application Incorporating an understanding of visual literacy can assist instructors across the curriculum. In Language Arts, it can help students that struggle in reading, because when you pair the text with images students can use the image to figure out what the text is saying. In Social Studies, instructors can use images to convey political information in a student friendly matter by using. Science and Math classes usually have diagrams that show concepts that are difficult for students to understand. Infographics, such as Piktocharts can be used across the curriculum to reinforce concepts. They can also be used in a project-based learning activity. Reading teacher can have students create them to display an understanding of figurative language. In Social Studies, students make create one to display data and explain things about a social issue. Science instructors can have students complete one showing their understanding of the Scientific Method, while Math teachers can have students make a infographic showing the order of operations. |
